Hi everyone! Hope you’re all doing well and had a good spring break! Brian and I are busy, but doing well also. We spent the last week up in the city of Nampula at our in-service training event with most of the volunteers that started at the same time as us here in Mozambique. Getting there was a little challenging. We took a chapa to Beira, spent the night there and got up the next morning to catch our flight. Unfortunately the airline had overbooked the plane and ended up telling three members of our group that either they would have to get off the plane, or all of our baggage would get left behind. They stood their ground and we just spent the next 12 hours without luggage! Normally that wouldn’t be a big deal, except that Brian was saving up for a nice hot shower at the hotel in Nampula so not only had he skipped his shower that morning, but was wearing nasty sweaty clothes from the day before. It was a stinky day for all involved. Even stinkier than usual, if you can believe that.
IST was really a lot of fun. We had meetings all day and actually got a lot of great info, but I would be lying if I didn’t say that getting to see our friends there and enjoying the fabulous amenities at the hotel weren’t major highlights. We channeled a little Josh Bryan and played the question game, asking everyone if they could take one thing back to site, would it be the shower with hot running water, the bed, or the air conditioning. Though there were a few that would go for the bed or the ac, the vast majority said the shower. I think the hotel will likely get their highest water bill of the year for the week that all of us were there given that nearly every volunteer took at least two showers per day, minimum. Heaven! Not to mention the food there was also incredible! Brian and I have a new found love for Indian food. We also ate some great Mozambican food. I think he averaged about 14 chamussas per day, and that’s only because he was restraining himself.
After the training, several volunteers from the central region (4 out of 7 of us were Oregonians! Woo hoo!) headed to this really beautiful little beach place outside of Beira for one night. We swam in the water, laid on the beach, stayed in these cute little huts, and ate fresh seafood for dinner. Not quite as luxurious as our hotel, but so beautiful and relaxing. To get there you have to take a little boat across the bay from one beach to the other. Unfortunately the tide was out the morning that we were trying to leave and being that transportation can be rather challenging here, we couldn’t wait for it to come back in for fear of not making it back to site before dark. So, we rolled up our pants, and waded across the bay carrying all of our luggage from the past week. When we finally made it to the other side, sweating and cursing, all we wanted was a nice, cold bottle of water from the little store there. Sadly though, the store sold nothing but semi-chilled pop and cookies. So we dined that morning on coldish Coke and Maria crackers. Breakfast of champions! P.s. speaking of breakfast of champions…Thika had a lovely breakfast of egg, tuna, oatmeal cookie and powdered sugar yesterday….
So, living here has provided us with a lot of wonderful experiences, but we’ve decided that the life of a volunteer, at least initially, is basically like living in a constant state of confusion. We almost never know what’s happening. It’s like we never ever get the memo! Sometimes because there’s actually a memo at school that we don’t get, but usually its cause we’re just not clued in. Even the simplest things, like going to church, can turn into an adventure. Just this last Sunday we went to church and even showed up early to make sure we would be there for the mass in Portuguese only to end up piled into a car with about 20 church members headed to the other end of town for a Palm Sunday march through town. We waved our little palm branches (Brian’s was really just a stick) for about two kilometers through town. Guess I should start wearing sunscreen to church just in case!
School is going well, though it’s been pretty challenging for me. Correcting compositions and tests for over 350 students is a lot of work! And managing classes with up to 90 students can be incredibly draining, particularly at 9pm when my brain has pretty much turned to mush. One of Brian’s biggest challenges is that he only sees his students for two hours per week, and it’s basically impossible to get in all the required material during that time, let alone have time for practice and discussion. However, probably our most frustrating challenge has definitely been giving tests. Cheating is quite common and often tolerated, so many students don’t think we’re serious when we threaten to give a 0 for cheating. We’re definitely serious and it has led to some very unpleasant exchanges. They also don’t appreciate the difficulty of the tests. I think one of my students summed it up best when he wrote a note at the end of my first test that simply said, “My God, Teacher.”
Well, we’re off to spend Easter with friends, but we’ll be thinking of all of you and hoping that you’re well. Miss and love you guys lots!
This is our friend Dov with a crab that he caught on the beach. Much more difficult than you would think! (Dov’s Blog: http://mozfantasticvoyage.blogspot.com/)
This is a close up of Dov’s crab. Dov said it perfectly when he described the little guy as “Disney cute”.
This is a photo of a cat we met named Jackson. Some might say he bears a striking resemblance to a much chubbier American cat that we all know and love. Oreo’s thinner African cousin perhaps?
Muscle posing on the beach!

This is the place we stayed at outside of Beira. You can see one of the little huts where we slept.

Thanks for the update, Jordan! I am glad you guys are holding your students to high standards! Can’t wait to see you both this summer!
Matt
Hi,
I loved seeing the pictures of all your friends. It is fun to finally put a face to the names we hear you speak of when we talk to you. You will come home with a whole new group of friends, as if you two didn’t have a big group of friends already. It sounds like you are both learning to be flexible. I must say I would vote for showers too, but I would insist that it comes with AC. Looking forward to more pictures!
LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU!
Mom
It’s so lovely to see Oreo’s family! Since she was a “girl on the run” when we took her in to our family many years ago, we never were formally introduced to her family! I will have you know… Oreo is looking quite trimmer these days. (I think it’s old age…or maybe she’s just getting into wedding shape!)
Great updates as always. That little crab DOES look like a disney character. I almost wanted to start singing “Under the Sea” from Little Mermaid…ok maybe I might have a little bit…don’t judge!
Beira looks really relaxing and beautiful. Glad you were able to escape for some relaxation.
Side note…on LOST this week…Kate and Sawyer had to walk through the water to get to a boat…kind of like you guys! Are you guys living the life of LOST!??! Just kidding! I really hope not because it’s quite a confusing life. I literally watch the show now and sometimes feel like I’m watching different language. I’m literally LOST! When every show is over, I just look over at Josh and says, “well… that was… interesting.”
I’m glad you all took advantage of the showers! I would have too! Brian… I hope you were able to give yourself a GOOD shower…from head to toe
Love the updates on that topic!
You know I’m fascinated with the showering factor of your lives
Well… today is offically 100 days until the wedding, which means…. about 72 days til you guys come home! Josh and I got our engagement pictures done this week and they turned out really well. Wedding planning is coming along swimmingly!
Keep your students learning at a high level. They really will thank you in the end! I would love to know what their mindset is for cheating? If it’s so commonly done, they must have reason behind it.
Love you guys tremendously! Sending Oodles and oodles of love and hugs your way. I can’t wait to see your faces SUPER SOON!
xoxoxo,
Lauren
So tell me why does Thika rate such a rich, yet well-rounded breakfast? Does dog status rise above in Mozambique? Or is that also what you eat for breakfast at home?
4 out of 7 are Oregonians? I guess that article in the Corvallis newspaper about so many Peace Corps Volunteers coming out of Oregon is ringing true. That is very fun!
Jordan, are you doing all the photo ops or just avoiding the camera? Or maybe you are choosing those that get posted? Would love to see one of you!!!
It is great to see how friendships become so special in your situation. I like that the Peace Corps encourages and even provides opportunities for you to have time together.
I really appreciate the blog especially knowing how difficult is is for you to keep it up. It is so much fun hearing about your adventures and seeing the pictures. Brian, you look great in the muscle pose!
Your trip home is coming fast. It will be so good to see you.
Love, Mom
So happy to hear from you! … and that you are doing well. We all are so looking forward to see you both in couple months! Look out hosting partents… your water bill might just be going up – ahhhhhhhh showers!
I almost read the LOST update above… yikes… I am two episodes behind at the moment…. that was a close one! I am liking this season….. making a bit more sense than nonsense!
Happy happy day! Take care and looking forward to seeing you soon.
Love ya! Loretta
Love your updates! There is a part of me that goes with you as you tell your very descriptive stories. I imagine myself walking across the bay with a my wordly goods on my back, sleeping in a hut, cheating in a classroom
etc…… You are very brave and adventurous!!! Keep up the great work!! AND how about that darling cat??! Yes, she does look like a younger more slim down version of OREO….. but I bet she doesn’t talk like our >O<!! And I agree, Wendy! We want photos of Jordan!!! It is great to see the smiles on the faces of your fellow volunteers!! Love to you all!! –Joni
love this update!
also, to chef Jordan, i would like to learn some good bean recipes – i meant to comment on one of your previous posts about cooking and beans (my boyfriend is quite the beans fan)! i’m glad you guys got to enjoy some luxuries including hot showers and great food!
looking forward to seeing you both in July
i admire what you’re doing and can’t wait to hear more!
Leah
I am always excited when I get your update. Wasn’t online yesterday so was so happy to log in today and find your email and pics. Glad you had such a great time. Like Joni, I could imagine wading through the water holding worldly possessions above to keep dry. Although the huts were not air-conditioned, it looked absolutely beautiful. Oreo’s distant cousin Jackson is trimmer, but am guessing he doesn’t get the pampering that Oreo gets. Am looking forward to seeing you this July.
Pat
Me again. I was just taking another look at the photos and realized they could be screen sized – that beach area looks a little like paradise – minus the plastic chairs!!
Jordan,
I echo your mother’s comments about both Thika’s breakfast (I would be so lucky to have that meal in the morning!) as well as your lack of pictures.
I am happy that you were able to use the Question Game. Everyone mocks it until they actually play it. I refuse to conform to the normal “Apples to Apples” games of the world. That being said, I would choose the shower, as well.
Thanks for the pictures and the updates. It’s great seeing Brian and hearing you! (Juuuuuust kidding.)
Josh
Hello Brian and Jordan——and Thika. We loved your email, Jordan. Always look forward to the pix. And we too, would like to see more pictures of you.
I’ll bet I know why Thika had such a yummy breakfast. Brian was still too full from eating 14 chamussas (whatever the heck that is) so he slipped HIS breakfast to the dog.Am I close? You see, I witnessed him slipping food to Reba and Cookie. Such a beautiful place to be.I wish we could roll up our pant legs and wade across the water to see you and hug you. I love to wade. We’re so proud of you guys.Keep up the good work. Every day you’re making a difference for someone and I truly envy you in that. G’ma & G’pa Mills P.S. Love the black and white kitty. I think he’s a FEW lbs. lighted than Lily.:)
